A Kenyatta University student was on Wednesday charged with impersonating Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Mr Ndegwa Muhoro on Facebook.

The prosecution alleges Mr John Kibowen Cheboiwo, a Computer Science student, opened a false Facebook account in the name of Mr Muhoro and defrauded unsuspecting Kenyans of over Sh 500,000.

The student is alleged to have pretended that he would fast track investigations of their cases.

He was freed on Sh300,000 bond.

Police say the accused obtained Sh100,750 from Mr James Gakobo Muriithi by pretending that he would help him get details of his father’s estate from the Lands Ministry. He allegedly committed the offence between December 21 and 26 last year.

The student is also accused of obtaining Sh425,000 from Mr Daniel Otieno Adero on diverse dates between December 28 last year and January 6, 2016.

The accused allegedly pretended that he was in apposition to fast track investigations into the murder Mr Adero’s brother who was killed in Nyamira County in the “line of his duty.”

Another charge stated that between May 22 and May 30 this year at unknown place, with intent to defraud, he falsely represented himself to be Mr Boinnet by opening a Facebook account in the name of the police boss.

The case will be heard on August 8.
